Principal Staff Officer (PSO) to Gen Kayani
- Chief of Logistics Staff (CLS)
Service history
- Commander. Bahawalpur XXXI Corps (as three-star/Lt General)
- Chairman. ERRA (as three-star/Lt General)
- Director-General, Punjab Rangers (as two-star/Maj General)
- General Officer Commanding, Special Services Group (as two-star/Maj General)
- Director, Military Operations Directorate (as one-star/Brigadier)
Winning hand
- Senior-most officer in the Pakistan Army after retirements this fall (Admiral Sandila of the Navy is the senior-most military officer overall). If he does not get CJCSC, Haroon should be getting COAS if seniority is put into consideration
- Was key in late woos western front operations where SSC (Special Forces) moved into frontline counterinsurgency/counterterror role from traditional alpine role
- Enjoys a more 'traditionalist' lobby and reputation amongst the Army's old schools
- Though an elite PSO, his current CLS position is a more bureaucratic job
- He's got the extra special 'red wings' of the SSC; you need at least 5o jumps to earn those. The man has a propensity to land on his feet. But he is not from one of the older, more elite regiments
- Broad-shouldered and not too tall, Aslam is a bespectacled commando. If Chief, he would be the third SSC officer to lead the Army (Pervez Musharraf and Mirza Aslam Beg already hold the precedent). He was Director of Military Operations in October 1999. Though only a Brigadier at the time, and hardly in a position to call the shots, Aslam still has to deal with that flak
